Statistical Challenges in Environmental Monitoring
Jon Barry (Cefas)
I am a statistician, specialising in environmental and ecological applications – particularly monitoring, I am also a former research student of Peter Diggle and an honorary lecturer in Lancaster University’s Data Science in the Natural Environment project.
My talk will be a whistle-stop tour of the statistical challenges that I experience in marine monitoring. These encompass statistical concepts such as: using Citizen Science data to generate useful estimates, how to get good data on European litter levels, dealing with spatially and temporally correlated data, very big data sets, communication to the public, using new technology, machine learning, and combining data from different sources.
